Quirky Football Unveilings – Evolving use of Social Media

Aug 23 2018

With the memories of the World Cup still fresh in our minds, the football (soccer) season is back underway with most top-tier European leagues having already played their first week of matches.

Lots of transfer business occurs every summer and winter, with football clubs – particularly in Europe – spending vast amounts on new players. Since last summer’s transfer window (the window opening in May and closing in August, whereby clubs have the chance to sell and purchase players ahead of the new season) following the world record £200 million ($263m) sale of Brazilian star Neymar from F.C Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), the market has skyrocketed and players are now routinely going for sums that several years ago would be close to record-breaking. Be heard – opinions matter

Aug 20 2018

Corporate communications can be risk-averse and consequently unchallenging, but the objective should often be the opposite – to engage your audience by being thought-provoking and inspirational. Risky, even. By injecting your writing with honest views, spiced with character – and a well-pitched level of controversy – you can engage your readers at a much more fundamental level.

The Next Bonfire of the Vanities

Aug 9 2018

As The New York Times noted in its obituary of author Tom Wolfe in May, his wildly successful “The Bonfire of the Vanities” provided readers with “a sweeping, bitingly satirical picture of money, power, greed and vanity in New York during the shameless excesses of the 1980s.”

Being the thorough journalist that he was, Mr. Wolfe carefully and accurately described how the novel’s central character, Sherman McCoy, made his living as a bond trader. Of course, explaining how Wall Street works wasn’t the purpose or the main thrust of the novel, but Mr. Wolfe did a great job of laying out how the sausage is made in layman’s terms.

[INFOGRAPHIC] A guide to corporate philanthropy

Aug 7 2018

“Good actions give strength to ourselves and inspire good actions in others.” – Plato

The “good action” of philanthropy should be a priority for any company that wants to strengthen their public image, improve employee morale and inspire positive global change. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a company’s sense of responsibility towards the community and environment in which it operates. Charitable giving is a selfless action, but the personal and professional benefits are undeniable. Read more…

A Perfect Pitch: Music to My Ears

Jul 30 2018

Everyone has that one song they can’t skip. The type of track that you can play on repeat and never get sick of listening to. As a hip-hop enthusiast, I have quite a few, but each one has something timeless that keeps me invested. Pitching clients to reporters is a bit like writing a song. Think about the four components of a hip-hop song: an intro, a hook, verses, and a beat.

Here’s how the basic structure of a song can make for a perfect pitch:

5 top tips for writing blog lists – or listicles!

Jul 26 2018

The internet is packed with lists of bite-sized chunks of information that are simplistic clickbait designed to boost traffic, but a well-designed list of great content is a fantastic way to communicate.

From the Ten Commandments to Buzzfeed’s mind-boggling list frenzy, human history is filled with lists that have a fantastic capacity to grab and then focus our attention. Humans, it seems, are hard-wired to engage with lists and that means they are an excellent content marketing tool.

I’ll drink to that!

Jul 24 2018

Last autumn, my wife, Colleen, and I invested in our local pub – along with 50+ other villagers. We lay claim to being the smallest community in the UK (160+ people) to own its own inn. After months of hard work by all, we recently got the good news that we’ve found the perfect tenants to run it. In early September, the newly named “The Winterbourne,” will open in the peaceful countryside of Winterbourne Bassett, Wiltshire with great real ales and a top-quality restaurant. So what are the lessons to be learned here?

I’d like to corrupt three cliches to answer that.

Entering the New Era of Banking Stress Tests

Jul 2 2018

As technology and regulation continue to mold and catalyze a structural evolution in the banking sector, so must the commissions and administrations that oversee it.

Earlier this year, the Fed announced that it is considering an overhaul to its annual stress tests that are given to the United States’ largest banks, transitioning from a Pass/Fail grading system to a more comprehensive approach that would mandate a capital ratio as soon as 2019, as reported by Ryan Tracy at The Wall Street Journal last week.

Some believe this is a necessary step to ensure we do not encounter another economic crisis, but others remain skeptical of whether the tests truly gauge the integrity of our largest banks.

Changing Methods of Marketing – From a Gaming Industry Perspective

Jun 28 2018

It would be incredibly difficult to find someone who has never played at least one video game in their life. The stereotypical view is that video games are made only for male teenagers and children – but this couldn’t be further from reality.

According to the Entertainment Software Association, in 2017 the average age of a gamer in the US was 35 – and 41% were female. This data is a clear indication that the industry is creating games that appeal to people from all walks of life. The gaming industry is now being increasingly used as a marketing channel. It’s no surprise that the sector is booming – in the US alone, the market was worth around $18.4bn (Statista, 2017), which provides an idea of the vast opportunities for marketing.
